I should also advise playing in a higher difficulty level: I usually play 'normal' but for some reason I selected 'hard' (aka Seasoned Raider) this time, and I still found the game far too easy. On the whole that was totally worth the ten euros I paid for it, and I warmly recommend it to my fellow Croft-sceptics.
The scenario is your classic adventure fare (racing with evil Fascists to get hold of magical mcguffin) but it is handled well enough, and the choice of setting (a Byzantine colony in Siberia) is particularly appealing and original (architecture, costumes and artefacts are well researched, except for the sculptures look more Hellenistic/Roman than Byzantine.) The progression system felt a little unnecessary: I never got around shooting multiple arrows or using most of my 'acquired skills'. The shooting encourages head-shots and the guns are all pretty good. The action is an excellent example of 'minimalist' controls: so many games have flaky cover systems, this one has to be the best 'automatic' one I've used. What impressed me most was the platforming, which was over the top but managed to give this (to me) tedious activity with a lot of tension and rhythm. Even the face-rigging and the dialogues are on a par with a good Hollywood flick. It does not do anything radically new, but it does everything so extremely well. I felt a bit bad about it, so when the game was on sale I did eventually buy it: that was a fine idea! This is a great game, with a very good balance of action, infiltration, exploration and platform.

I actually got ROTTR for free with my laptop, and I was so non-plused I never used the download key, and it eventually expired!
